DNS Changeover

admin | April 14, 2010 | 3:14 pm

Mark the 5th of May on your calendar because the domain name system is being changed over to a more secure, new protocol.

The move to the DNSSEC protocol won’t even cause a blip for most broadband users or websites, although if you have a subscription to a disreputable internet service provider or an incompatible firewall, you’ve basically got no chance.

The new, secure protocol is meant to drastically reduce the risk of falling victim to internet attacks, a problem that has been steadily growing worse. So before the 5th of May, make sure your website provider is a reputable one and that your firewalls are up to date.

What Domain name?

admin | March 23, 2010 | 3:11 pm

Existing businesses tend to use their trading name, already known to customers to build on its existing profile within the local market and maximise its reputation and accessibility.  If you are new to the market be sure to consider the theme of your website and brandability.  The website content is more important for search engines and long keyword domain names can be difficult to remember, hindering your brand building.  Search engines will supply local results and websites registered with country level domains are giving more weight when search engines are serving local search requests.  Keeping this in mind you must consider where your target market is. If you are looking at supplying within country only, then you may look at registering a ccTLD eg. in the UK , co. UK.  If you are targeting further a field then top level domains eg. .com, .net, .org, should be used.  Non-profit organisations end in .org, while commercial organisations end with .com.  There are new top level domain names now available .biz, .info, and .name.  Registering domain names is on a yearly basis and regulations do vary in each country so be sure to look into this, or use a registration service.

Worrying Statistics on Domain Name Info.

admin | February 18, 2010 | 11:20 am

New research conducted by ICANN has found that 77% of internet domains have been registered with unverifiable, false or incomplete information. This translates into around 90 million internet addresses – a huge amount!

ICANN conducted a review that included contact with domain name owners as well as the registrations. ICANN found that a small 23% of domain registrations display the full and correct information. The other 77% without correct or full information could be seen as showing signs – some more than others – of shady business and in some cases, criminality. Be warned.

Avoiding the Pitfalls

admin | February 2, 2010 | 12:05 pm

So, are you new to the wonderful world of website hosting? It isn’t easy deciding which company to go with, what advert to trust and so on and so forth. If you’re serious about your website though, there’s one rookie mistake you simply can’t afford to make – and that’s to fall for all the free website hosting adverts. Most people learn throughout their lives that ‘free’ doesn’t necessarily mean free – and if it does, then there is almost always a catch.

The catch with free website hosting is the unprofessional look and feel of your website. You’re not paying anything, so obviously you’re not getting anything in return. Aside from an unprofessional look, free web hosting companies often insist on a long domain name where their domain name placed in front of yours. Confusing, unattractive and far too much effort to type in. So, if you’re really serious about websites, don’t take the cheapest route – go with a professional company!
