FTC Highlights Data Breach

admin | February 24, 2010 | 9:28 am

Peer to peer networks (P2P) have recently been the cause of companies being in breach of data control regulations. The breach has been addressed by the US Federal Trade Commission.

The cause was thought to be computers that had been inadequately configured and that were potentially allowing unauthorised access to sensitive information.  The US Federal Trade Commission stressed that it is the duty of any organisation to ensure all data is securely held.

Out sourcing your web presence allows you to benefit from security focused resources and expertise. Layer Seven Hosting provides this as standard and therefore solves security issues that many customers could not afford.

From the 1st March a new page will pop up offering your potential customer a choice of 13 web browsers, named the Ballot Screen. This is Microsoft’s solution to anti-competitive complaints from other browser providers and will allow European users of Windows PCs to select a browser of their choice.

It then follows that Layer Seven Hosting is of even more importance as it will ensure your web presence is not concentrated on one browser provider.

AVOIDING DOWNTIME

admin | February 23, 2010 | 1:23 pm

So it’s a Friday night and you plan to stay in and watch a film. Then you read ‘We’re sorry, the Netflix Website is temporarily unavailable. Our engineers are working hard to bring the site back up as soon as possible.” And there go your plans.

The Netflix engineers work hard and fix the problem several hours later. Unfortunately, in the meantime, 10 million subscribers have been looking elsewhere and have written requesting a refund.  Ok, so not all Netflix customers were unable to receive their movie that night but, for those that didn’t, it struck them as a very peculiar time for Netflix to perform routine maintenance.

Downtime can have a huge negative impact on a company’s reputation and its profits.  Downtime is an unfortunate occurence for anyone with a website and yet, it can be easily avoided. The solution? Layer 7 Hosting.

Worrying Statistics on Domain Name Info.

admin | February 18, 2010 | 11:20 am

New research conducted by ICANN has found that 77% of internet domains have been registered with unverifiable, false or incomplete information. This translates into around 90 million internet addresses – a huge amount!

ICANN conducted a review that included contact with domain name owners as well as the registrations. ICANN found that a small 23% of domain registrations display the full and correct information. The other 77% without correct or full information could be seen as showing signs – some more than others – of shady business and in some cases, criminality. Be warned.

Avoiding the Pitfalls

admin | February 2, 2010 | 12:05 pm

So, are you new to the wonderful world of website hosting? It isn’t easy deciding which company to go with, what advert to trust and so on and so forth. If you’re serious about your website though, there’s one rookie mistake you simply can’t afford to make – and that’s to fall for all the free website hosting adverts. Most people learn throughout their lives that ‘free’ doesn’t necessarily mean free – and if it does, then there is almost always a catch.

The catch with free website hosting is the unprofessional look and feel of your website. You’re not paying anything, so obviously you’re not getting anything in return. Aside from an unprofessional look, free web hosting companies often insist on a long domain name where their domain name placed in front of yours. Confusing, unattractive and far too much effort to type in. So, if you’re really serious about websites, don’t take the cheapest route – go with a professional company!
